4 competitors from Wales to join Team UK at WorldSkills Shanghai

WorldSkills UK Announces UK Team!

We are pleased to announce that WorldSkills UK has selected 4 competitors from Wales to join Team UK at the 46th WorldSkills competition in Shanghai this Autumn.

The selected Welsh Competitors are George Denman (Swansea University), Michael Jones (GE Aviation), and Charles Samson (Coleg Cambria) who will be competing in the Manufacturing Team Challenge, and Ben Lewis (Gower College Swansea) who will be competing in Industrial Electronics.

WorldSkills supports young people from around the world taking part in competition-led training, assessment, and benchmarking, with competitors from national teams testing their ability to achieve world-class standards in an Olympic-style skills competition.

In total 39 young people will be flying the flag for the UK in 33 disciplines over four days of intense competition from 13th – 16th October 2022. Young people from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be vying with peers from more than 80 countries to be crowned world’s best in their particular skill area.

The final squad selection follows several rounds of competition and intense training and skills development, with the international competition the final stage in the WorldSkills journey. The worldwide competition takes place every two years, and is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world.

Team UK will be looking to improve on its 12th place finish at the 2019 event in Kazan, Russia and climb back into the medal table Top 10. Battling against rivals from the likes of China, Germany, Australia, Switzerland and Japan, the UK team will be competing in skills including Cyber Security, Chemical Lab Technician, Digital Construction, Hairdressing, Mechanical Engineering and Painting & Decorating.

Minister for Economy Vaughan Gething said: “It’s fantastic to see so many Welsh competitors taking part in the international WorldSkills competitions. WorldSkills brings together some of the most creative, skilled, and driven young people in Wales.”

“It’s vital that we continue to invest in future generations and continue to provide opportunities for young people to showcase the exceptional talent we have in this country and bring back skills they learn to our Welsh businesses. I wish all of the competitors the very best of luck.”
