Have a Go activities included in ‘The Future is in our Hands’ Apprenticeships Career Fair

‘The Future is in our Hands’ Apprenticeships Career Fair took place in Newport yesterday, hosted by the National Training Federation for Wales (NTFW), the Romani Cultural and Arts Company (RCAC) and Maindee Primary School, who are working collaboratively to raise awareness of apprenticeships to the Gypsy Roma and Traveller communities in Newport.

Also in attendance were ACT Training, iTEch Media, Careers Wales and several Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

The event included several of our Have a Go activities, such as catering, hairdressing, beauty, IT, Automotive CAN, virtual welding and construction. This provided an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to young people the different paths available to them in terms of apprenticeships and how they can earn while they learn.

As well as information stalls to attract individuals and groups interested in apprenticeships, career development and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses.

With a strong turnout of students to the event, there was engagement from several pupils and adults, all interacting with the kits. Everyone at the event had the opportunity to explore various vocational skills which could lead to a career pathway they may have never thought of before the event. There was even a visit from Deputy Leader of Newport City Council, Cllr Deb Davies, and the councillor got involved with several Have a Go activities, including construction.

Paul Evans, Project Director for Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales said, “The ISEiW team believe initiatives such as this are incredibly important, to ensure we inspire learners from all backgrounds, and give everyone the opportunity to get involved.

“Yesterday’s event saw us engage a new wave of learners by utilising the Have A Go equipment, and hopefully have encouraged them to consider their own future career paths whilst showcasing how exciting vocational learning can be.”
