Welsh businesses’ play key role in supporting skills competitions for young people.
As part of Skills Competition Wales 2022, an element of the Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales project, a construction competition for 14–16-year-olds was piloted.
The competition was made possible by donations of tools and prizes for each school from the Stonework Federation and Cyfle Building Skills. It is this support from businesses, which really helps ensure competitions such as this make a difference to young people’s education, whether that be through providing access to high-quality, contemporary equipment, or offering vital careers insight.
Skills Competition Wales aims to help encourage and support Welsh talent to hone their skills at a regional and national level, with the ISEiW project overall providing young people with improved employability skills and life-changing opportunities.
The winners of the 14-16 construction competition were recently awarded their certificates and medals during a presentation at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Ammanford campus, dedicated to the students winning gold, silver and bronze in the all-Wales competition.
The school students were entered into the newly-trialled competition by the construction team at Coleg Sir Gâr, as they study a school-link construction course at the college.
Jac Morgan from Coedcae Comprehensive School won gold, Osian Roberts from Maes y Gwendraeth won silver, and Dion Williams from Maes y Gwendraeth won bronze.
The competitors were judged on various areas of their work including alignment, jointing, housekeeping and economy of materials.
ISEiW believes relationships with local and national businesses are key to the success of its competitions and workshops, and the benefits this offers to students cannot be underestimated. Sectors covered by the project are Construction and Infrastructure, Engineering and Technology, Health, Hospitality and Lifestyle, IT and Enterprise, Media and Creative.
